Edward Logan, his father, is a wealthy white landowner and widower with three white sons. A coming-of-age story, it is narrated by Cassie's grand-father, Paul-Edward, born into slavery shortly before the end of the civil war. The novel is a prequel to Roll of Thunder. Mildred Taylor's dedication in The Land pays her respects "to the memory of my beloved father, the storyteller, for without his words, my words would not have been". Much of their fiction was revelatory, not only in its subject matter, but because of the compelling talent of the storytellers who drew on a vibrant oral tradition. Following Julius Lester's seminal To Be a Slave, they mined history and experience that had been trampled under the boots of white society.
